Are you looking for a feature-riched debit card from your bank so that you can grab most of the benefits from online shopping on sites like Amazon or Flipkart or you searching a debit card which gives you free unlimited ATM access with a higher cash withdrawal limit?
A debit card is the first thing we get from a bank just after opening a bank account in India. In a country like India, where digital payments are still in the nascent stage, we generally consider, a debit card is for cash withdrawal at ATMs during the emergency period. But a debit card can be used for various purposes other than cash withdrawal. In our previous article, we have discussed various types of debit cards in India and what are the main advantages of debit cards in India. You can read the article here
Here, in this article, we try to cover the top 10 best debit cards in India based on features, cash withdrawal limits, offers and discounts on various eCommerce websites and several other factors.
Before getting into the actual topic, let us have some ideas about what features you should consider before asking your bank the right kinds of debit cards for you.
Factors to be considered for selecting a Debit Card
Before asking your bank the right kind of debit card, you should consider the following factors
- Selection of Bank: A debit card is an addon product that you will get after opening a savings bank account and top banks have the best and feature-riched debit cards in India. Therefore, select the right banks to get the best debit card.
- Types of Cards: Visa, Mastercard, and Rupay are the three most popular card network providers in India. Clearly ask your Bank, what types of debit card you need. Other than Rupay, all the card payment gateway providers are non-Indian companies and these cards are maybe or may not be international transaction-enabled.
- Security: This is the most important factor nowadays, though the different security measures of the card mainly depend upon the card issuing bank. Therefore, you must select the right bank to open your savings account.
- Contactless Payment Features: For quick and easy payments at merchant outlets, your debit cards should be contactless-enabled. All newer debit cards issued by the banks are now contactless type. I have already discussed some best contactless debit cards in India, you may read the article here.
- ATM Transaction Charges: Some debit cards provide you the only fewer number of free ATM transactions per month and some debit cards give you unlimited free ATM access to any bank’s ATM. Therefore, if you are a person who needs to access the ATM frequently, then you should select the debit card that gives free ATM access.
- Overdraft Facility: Some top banks in India, now started to provide EMI features on debit cards for purchases made from online shopping sites like Amazon or Flipkart. To make your debit card EMI enabled, the card provider banks create an overdraft account instantly whenever you purchase any item from these online shopping sites. The bank then links the overdraft account to your savings account and deducts the monthly installments as per your EMI option. Some debit cards deduct charges for EMI facilities and some give you the services for free. Though Debit EMI features on debit cards is solely dependent on card-issuing banks and only some selected banks in India have this feature right now.
- Rewards Points: All the top bank debit cards provide you the rewards points based on transactions made using the debit card online. The accumulated Reward Points can be redeemed for instant cashback or discounts on many e-commerce websites for online purchases. Some bank’s debit cards have more acceptance on eCommerce websites than others.
- Card Renewal Charges: Debit Card renewal fee is one of the most important factors you must consider. Premium features on a debit card come with high renewal charges, but you may also get the same features with low renewal fees with some other types of debit cards.
- International Transaction Access: Consider those debit cards which are international transaction enabled, if want to use the debit card for overseas eCommerce websites.

Can a Minor below 18 years get a Debit Card?
As per RBI norms, any child above 10 years old can open a savings account singly or under Guardianship up to the age of 18 years. Children above 10 years can operate a savings account himself/herself without any guardianship of parents if he/she can make the signature by himself/herself, though these type of minor account has some restriction, like maximum withdrawal up to Rs.5000 per day.
The issuance of Debit card to a minor account solely depends on the card-issuing banks, many private banks like ICICI, HDFC or Axis Banks are issuing debit cards to the minor accounts, but PSU banks may not provide debit cards to minor accounts. For the same reason, cheque books are also not issued to minors. The main reason behind that as per the Negotiable Instrument Act, any agreement or contract with a person below the age of 18 is void, a minor will not incur any loss or liability if any fraud or loss happens to Banks.
Final Thought
All the debit cards discussed above, are best in their respective categories, but it is a personal choice and it depends upon individuals’ requirements and which banks you are maintaining your accounts. The private banks’ debit card offers more features and benefits whereas, in PSU banks, you won’t find so much choice. Still, you can make most out of your debit card by using it sensibly in online shopping. But one thing you should always remember, a debit card is directly linked to the savings bank account, therefore you should always be extra vigilant while using this card online as well as offline.
